Llata is a traditional craft based on weaving natural plant fibres, particularly the leaves of the Mediterranean dwarf fan palm. These woven strips have traditionally been used to make baskets, bags, hats and many other everyday objects.

In Gata, working with llata has played an important economic and social role for centuries. Generation after generation, the knowledge of preparing the palm, weaving it and turning it into different objects was passed down within families. During the 19th and 20th centuries, this activity also became an important part of the town’s commercial life.

As new materials and industrial products became widespread, the craft gradually declined, but the tradition never disappeared. Today, local artisans and associations continue working to preserve and pass on this knowledge.

🌿 Associació Palmes i Llata: Keeping a Traditional Craft Alive

Among these initiatives is the Associació Palmes i Llata, which works to preserve, promote and pass on this traditional craft so closely connected to Gata.

Its work is not simply about preserving old pieces or remembering how things were made in the past. It is also about making sure that llata continues to be practised, learned and shared.

Because a tradition remains alive when its knowledge passes from one generation to the next.

On Saturday 10 October at 6:00 pm, the Associació Palmes i Llata will hold a llata workshop as part of the Fira programme.

It will be a hands-on activity where participants can discover this traditional technique, learn more about the materials and experience for themselves a craft that is deeply connected to Gata’s identity.
